Germany, Austria, Switzerland, Sweden, Norway, and Finland require winter tires during cold months. Your rental car should already have them — but verify at pickup. In the US and Canada, winter tires are not typically included unless you specifically request them or rent from a mountain location.
For snow driving, AWD (All-Wheel Drive) is ideal — it automatically sends power to wheels with traction. Most crossover SUVs have AWD. 4WD (Four-Wheel Drive) is for off-road and extreme conditions — common in trucks and full-size SUVs. Front-wheel drive with winter tires is adequate for most plowed roads and light snow.
Mountain passes in the western US (I-80 Donner Pass, I-70 in Colorado) and European alpine roads sometimes require chains. Rental companies typically prohibit installing chains on their vehicles — ask before assuming you can. Some companies rent chains or cables as an add-on. Alternatively, AWD vehicles are often chain-exempt.
Before driving in winter conditions: clear all snow and ice from the car (roof included — flying roof snow is dangerous and illegal in many places), verify the defrost and heater work, check that wiper fluid is full, test the headlights, and locate the ice scraper. Allow extra time for everything — winter driving is slower driving.
