Cruise travelers have unique rental needs. Timing around embarkation, getting from port to rental counter, and choosing the right pickup strategy all matter.

Most cruise ports are not within walking distance of rental car facilities. Plan your transfer before you dock. Options include taxi (quickest but most expensive), rideshare (cheapest for solo travelers), port shuttle (if available), and public transit (cheapest but slowest). Know your plan before you step off the ship.
PortMiami to MIA rental center: 15 minutes by taxi ($20-25). Port Canaveral to MCO airport: 45 minutes ($50-70 by taxi, or rent from a Port Canaveral area agency). Port Everglades to FLL rental center: 10 minutes ($15-20). Galveston port to Hobby Airport: 45 minutes. San Juan cruise port to SJU airport: 15 minutes.
Disembarkation typically takes 1-3 hours from when the ship docks until you are off with your luggage. Do not book a rental pickup for 8 AM if the ship docks at 7 AM — you will not make it. Schedule your pickup for at least 2 hours after the scheduled docking time, and 3 hours if this is your first cruise.
If you plan to explore the port city before heading to the airport for your rental, some ports offer luggage storage for $5-10 per bag. This lets you walk around freely without dragging suitcases. The cruise terminal or a nearby storage service can hold your bags until you are ready to head to the rental counter.
