Driving in a new country or unfamiliar conditions requires preparation. The rules, roads, and rental expectations can be very different from what you are used to.

An International Driving Permit is a standardized translation of your driver's license into 10+ languages. It does not replace your license — you must carry both. It is not an exam or separate license. It simply helps foreign authorities and rental agents verify your credentials when they cannot read your home license.
Strictly required: Italy, Austria, Germany (for non-EU licenses), Greece, Japan, Thailand, Vietnam, and most of Central and South America. Strongly recommended (may be asked for): Spain, Portugal, France, Turkey, UAE, and Australia. Not needed: UK, Ireland, Canada, and most Caribbean islands for US license holders.
Only two organizations are authorized to issue IDPs in the US: AAA and the American Automobile Touring Alliance (AATA). Cost is approximately $20. You need two passport photos and a completed application. AAA offices can issue it same-day; mail applications take 4-6 weeks. Do not buy IDPs from other websites — they are not internationally recognized.
Even in countries where an IDP is not strictly required, having one prevents problems. Rental agencies may refuse to rent to you without one. Police during traffic stops may fine you or detain you while verifying your license through other channels. For $20 and 15 minutes at AAA, the peace of mind is worth it.
