Renting a car in a new city is easier when you know what locals know. Traffic patterns, parking tricks, and the best pickup locations are different everywhere.

LAS is just 2 miles from the Strip, making it one of the most conveniently located airports in America. The rental car center is a short shuttle ride from the terminals. Pickup is fast outside of Friday evenings and Sunday afternoons when convention and weekend crowds surge.
If you are staying on the Strip and not leaving it, you do not need a rental car. The Deuce bus runs 24/7 along the Strip, rideshares are plentiful, and most hotels are walkable from each other (though distances are deceiving). Rent only if you plan to visit the Grand Canyon, Hoover Dam, Red Rock Canyon, or Valley of Fire.
Red Rock Canyon is a 30-minute drive — the scenic loop alone is worth a half-day rental. Hoover Dam is 45 minutes. Valley of Fire is 1 hour and arguably the most stunning landscape near Vegas. The Grand Canyon South Rim is about 4.5 hours — doable as a long day trip but better as an overnight.
Most major Strip resorts now charge for parking: $15-23/day for self-parking, $26-40/day for valet. If you have a rental car and are staying on the Strip, this adds up fast. Some off-Strip hotels still offer free parking. Factor parking costs into your rental decision.
