Before You Leave the Hotel
Check every compartment: glove box, center console, door pockets, under seats, and the trunk. Left-behind items are rarely recovered. Remove your phone mount, charger, and any personal items from the dashboard. If you used the car's Bluetooth, delete your phone's connection from the car's system.
Fuel Up Nearby
If your rental is full-to-full, find a gas station within 1-2 miles of the return location. Fill up completely and keep the receipt. Gas stations immediately adjacent to airports sometimes charge a premium — one or two exits away is usually cheaper. Top off even if the gauge shows full — rental companies measure to the tenth of a gallon.
Photos Before Drop-Off
Just as you photographed the car at pickup, take photos at return. Walk around the entire car and capture every angle. If there is new damage, photograph it separately. This protects you if the company claims additional damage was found after you left.
Get a Printed or Emailed Receipt
Before walking away, confirm your return has been processed and request a receipt showing the final charges. Compare the total to your original agreement. If the amounts differ, ask why immediately. It is much easier to resolve billing issues at the counter than by phone weeks later.
