The number one mistake families make is renting too small. A "full-size" sedan fits 2 adults and 2 kids with luggage — barely. If you have 2+ children with car seats, strollers, and vacation gear, start with a midsize SUV at minimum. For families of 5+, a minivan is almost always the right call and often costs less per day than a large SUV.
Rental company car seats cost $10-15/day, which on a 7-day trip is $70-105. You can often check your car seat at the airport for free (most airlines don't count it toward luggage limits). Bringing your own seat guarantees you know it's properly maintained, correctly installed, and your child is familiar with it. If you must rent, inspect the seat carefully for expiration dates, cracks, and missing parts.
Long drives with kids require preparation. Download movies and shows to tablets before your trip (airport WiFi is unreliable). Pack a small bag of snacks, activities, and chargers that stays in the car. If you're renting for a road trip, consider a vehicle with a built-in entertainment system or at minimum, multiple USB ports in the back seat.
Before driving off, familiarize yourself with the car's controls — headlights, wipers, hazards, child locks. Locate the spare tire and jack. Save the rental company's roadside assistance number in your phone. For road trips, keep a basic kit in the car: water bottles, first aid supplies, phone charger, and a paper map as backup.
