Cruise travelers have unique rental needs. Timing around embarkation, getting from port to rental counter, and choosing the right pickup strategy all matter.

Cruise ship shore excursions typically cost $80-150 per person for a guided tour. For a couple or family, that is $160-600 for a few hours. Renting a car for the day at a port of call often costs $40-80 total, giving you freedom to explore at your own pace and visit places the tours skip.
Renting is ideal at ports with good road infrastructure and attractions spread across a wide area: Alaska (Juneau to Mendenhall Glacier), Hawaii (any port), Caribbean islands like Barbados, Puerto Rico, St. Martin, and US ports like Key West, Galveston, and San Juan. Look for rental agencies within walking distance or a short taxi ride from the port.
Avoid renting in ports with unfamiliar driving rules (left-side driving if you are not used to it), poor road conditions, or where distances are short enough for taxis: many Eastern Caribbean islands, small Mexican ports, and ports where you dock for less than 6 hours.
Ships typically dock at 7-8 AM and require you back onboard by 4-5 PM. That gives you roughly 8-9 hours. Book the rental for a full day but pick up as early as possible. Return at least 90 minutes before the "all aboard" time to account for traffic, gas, and rental return processing. The ship will not wait for you.
